Industrial Montalfita, S.A. was one of hundreds of Catalan industrial firms and municipalities that issued small-denomination emergency paper during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's collapse of small-change supply left workers unable to buy basic goods. These vales — effectively scrip redeemable only within the issuing company's sphere — filled a genuine transactional vacuum in 1936–1937 before the Generalitat de Catalunya moved to suppress unauthorized local issues.
The thick card stock was a deliberate choice: thinner paper disintegrated quickly in factory and market conditions, and issuers had no interest in reprinting constantly.
