Boniface — the Anglo-Saxon monk born Wynfrith in Devon around 675 — was martyred in Frisia in 754, and his mission to the Germanic tribes remains one of the more consequential ecclesiastical campaigns of the early medieval period. The zero-euro souvenir series, launched in France around 2015 and produced under license by Oberthur Fiduciaire, repurposes genuine banknote security printing — including eurion constellations and ultraviolet-reactive inks — for commemorative notes with no legal tender status anywhere.
Oberthur's involvement gives these pieces a material authenticity that cheaper tourist items lack. The paper and print quality meet the same technical specifications the firm applies to circulating currency contracts.
