The zero-euro souvenir note program launched in 2015, with Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte among the earliest sites to participate. The château has a particular claim on French monetary history: its builder, Nicolas Fouquet, was Louis XIV's finance superintendent, arrested in 1661 partly on the suspicion that he had diverted royal funds to construct the estate. The king's subsequent seizure of Fouquet's entire design team — Le Vau, Le Brun, Le Nôtre — for Versailles is one of the more brazen acts of architectural appropriation on record.
Oberthur Fiduciaire's involvement lends the series genuine security credentials, including the hologram strip that distinguishes these from simple novelty prints.
