Covadonga, in the Asturian mountains, is where a Visigothic nobleman named Pelayo is said to have defeated an Umayyad force around 722 AD — an event later mythologized as the starting point of the Reconquista. The VEBY program, coordinated through the European Banknote Memory Organization, licensed souvenir zeroes to tourist sites across the continent beginning in 2017, with Oberthur Fiduciaire producing the notes to genuine euro security specifications, including the correct substrate and UV-reactive features.
Legal tender for nothing, but technically indistinguishable in construction from circulating denominations.
