Adriaan Florisz Boeyens of Utrecht — elected as Adrian VI in 1522 — remains the last non-Italian pope until John Paul II, and the only Dutch-born pontiff in history. His papacy lasted barely twenty months before his death in 1523, leaving him largely a footnote in Rome but a point of civic pride in the Netherlands. The EuroSouvenir program, administered under license from the European Central Bank, began producing these legal-tender commemorative zeroes in 2015 as a collector-oriented tourism instrument — they circulate only as souvenirs, never as transactional currency.
