Pope Paul VI — born Giovanni Battista Montini — was beatified in 2014 and canonized by Francis in October 2018, making this 2022 souvenir note relatively prompt in commemorating a recently declared saint. The EuroSouvenir program, launched in 2015 with formal authorization from the European Central Bank, allows licensed printers to produce legal-format novelty notes provided they carry a zero denomination — a technical requirement that prevents any confusion with actual currency.
Oberthur Fiduciaire's involvement gives these notes genuine security printing credentials; the hologram strip is not decorative theater but production-line standard for the facility.
