San Andrés de Teixido is a pilgrimage site in Galicia's A Coruña province, built on coastal cliffs at the far northwestern edge of Spain. The shrine has pre-Christian roots and carries a local belief with no real European parallel: those who fail to make the pilgrimage in life must complete it after death, reincarnated as an insect or small creature along the road. Pilgrims still take care not to step on lizards or ants for that reason.
The zero-euro souvenir format was introduced in France in 2015 and expanded across European tourist sites rapidly thereafter. Oberthur prints them to genuine banknote specification — security thread, correct substrate — which is part of the commercial appeal.
