Schloss Burg — the medieval hilltop castle above the Wupper valley in the Bergisches Land — is one of the largest reconstructed castles in northwest Germany, rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries after centuries of decay following the Duchy of Berg's seat moving to Düsseldorf in 1380. The 0 Euro souvenir series, launched by the Paris-based Société Européenne de Conception de Souvenirs in 2015, uses genuine Oberthur-printed banknote stock with live security features precisely to satisfy collector demand for something that feels like legal tender without the legal complications of being any.
The zero denomination means it carries no monetary obligation — technically a collector item from first printing, never intended to pass through a cash register.
