The zero euro souvenir note was introduced in France in 2016 by Richard Faille, a collector and entrepreneur who licensed the concept to participating tourist sites. Oberthur produced them with the same security features as genuine euro banknotes — correct paper stock, UV elements, and microprinting — making them legally unambiguous as non-currency while remaining technically impressive as printed objects. Thoiry was among the earliest adopters in that first wave, and early 2016 issues from the inaugural sites now attract modest premiums among dedicated collectors of the series.
