Valkenburg aan de Geul, a small limestone-bedrock town in the Dutch province of Limburg, sits at the center of a surprisingly dense souvenir note market — the town's underground castle ruins and maze of man-made caves make it one of the most visited day-trip destinations in the Netherlands, which explains why it warranted its own EuroSouvenir issue. These zero-denomination notes carry no legal tender status anywhere but are printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire to full banknote security specifications, including genuine security paper and microprinting — a deliberate choice by the EuroSouvenir program to make counterfeiting economically pointless.
