Memo Euros are a Dutch-produced novelty series issued by Euroscope, printed by Enschedé in Haarlem — the same house responsible for genuine euro banknotes for several issuing central banks. They carry no monetary value and are not legal tender anywhere, but the quality of substrate and security features, including a genuine hologram strip, has occasionally caused confusion at point-of-sale terminals in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The Zeebrugge edition commemorates the North Sea port, one of Europe's busiest container terminals and the site of the 1987 Herald of Free Enterprise disaster.
