Nigeria's polymer 1,000 Naira was introduced as part of a controversial 2022 redesign ordered by President Buhari's government, ostensibly to combat counterfeiting and mop up illicitly held cash ahead of the 2023 elections. The rollout was catastrophic — the CBN imposed aggressive deadlines for retiring the old cotton-paper notes, triggering a severe cash shortage that persisted into early 2023 and sparked nationwide protests. Emefiele, whose signature appears on the earliest polymer issues, was suspended and later arrested in June 2023 on charges unrelated to the redesign but politically entangled with it.

The 2024 signature change reflects Cardoso's appointment as CBN Governor after Emefiele's removal — a rare instance where a mid-series signature transition maps directly onto a high-profile political rupture.
