The Membang Moeda issues from Sumatra in 1947 were emergency regional notes, authorized by the Indonesian Republican government during the Dutch military campaign to reclaim the archipelago. With the Dutch naval blockade severely disrupting communications and supply lines between Java and the outer islands, Sumatra's Republican administration was forced to produce its own currency locally rather than rely on centrally printed notes from Yogyakarta.

Handstamp authentication was the only available control mechanism under those conditions — not a design choice, a logistical one. The handstamp varies enough between surviving examples that forgery detection was genuinely difficult at the time.
