| Reverse description | The reverse presents a left-facing armored bust of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador and first European to sight the Pacific Ocean from the New World, rendered in high relief with fine detail on his morion helmet and gorget. The helmet is elaborately engraved with scrollwork and fitted with a prominent raised comb and brim. To the left of the bust runs a stylized spray of tropical flora, while waves or water lines appear to the right, alluding to the Pacific Ocean. The denomination legend MEDIO-BALBOA arcs boldly along the upper periphery in large capital letters. |
