Obverse description Armored bust of Emperor Charles V facing right, wearing a crown, with long hair falling to the shoulders; the emperor holds an imperial orb in his right hand and a scepter is visible at his side. The effigy is rendered in a bold, somewhat stylized late-Gothic manner characteristic of early sixteenth-century German hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the portrait, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery reading KAROLVS*ROMANO*IMPE:, identifying the ruler as Roman Emperor.
