Buck Island was a short-lived private issuing authority operating in the late 1950s, and the "Eirene" series takes its name from the Greek personification of peace — an idealistic gesture in the year the series was struck, four years into the nuclear arms race following Sputnik. These issues were never legal tender in any jurisdiction and circulated, if at all, as tokens within a specific private context whose full documentation remains incomplete in standard references.
