Obverse description Within the brass-plated steel centre, a mounted equestrian figure — widely identified as Omar Mukhtar on horseback — faces left with one arm raised, rendered in relief against a plain field. The outer nickel-plated steel ring bears a circular Arabic legend along the upper arc reading the full official state name of Libya, with the Gregorian year 2009 and the Hijri commemorative date 1377 (years since the death of the Prophet) appearing in the lower arc of the ring.
