Obverse description A draped allegorical figure of the French Republic stands facing in the field, her head turned slightly to the right, robed in classical garments. To her left she holds a fasces — the Roman symbol of authority — while to her right she grasps a tall pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs around the periphery, with a decorative milled border running along the rim.
