Comments

Chile's escudo replaced the peso at a rate of 1,000 to one in 1960, a redenomination designed to cope with chronic inflation — yet by the time this series was withdrawn in 1975, inflation had rendered even the escudo worthless, with the military junta ultimately replacing it with the new peso at 1,000 escudos to one, completing a full circle of monetary collapse.

The two signature combinations reflect successive central bank administrations across a turbulent thirteen-year print run that spanned Alessandri, Frei, Allende, and Pinochet governments. Casa de Moneda de Chile printed the entire series domestically.
