| Additional information |
Rwanda's first national coinage was issued in 1964 following independence from Belgian-administered trusteeship, replacing the Rwanda-Burundi franc. This 1970 piece comes from the early years of Juvénal Habyarimana's eventual consolidation of power — though the coup that brought him to office didn't occur until 1973. The aluminium-magnesium alloy was a deliberate choice for a low-denomination coin in a country where metal costs needed to stay well below face value.
