Monaco's franc-denominated coinage persisted well past the point where equivalent French issues had been retired, largely because the Principality negotiated independent minting rights under its monetary convention with France. Rainier III used these agreements strategically — coin production runs were kept deliberately modest, with many years seeing mintages low enough that circulation examples are scarcer than their modest face values suggest.
