Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Emperor Menelik II wearing an elaborately decorated crown adorned with jewels and striped bands, with a beaded necklace and military-style collar visible at the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic style characteristic of late 19th-century French medallic art. The engraver's signature LA GRANGE appears incuse along the lower truncation of the bust. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy, reading the imperial title of Menelik II as King of Kings of Ethiopia, separated by decorative dot ornaments. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border and a finely reeded outer rim.
