The Algemeene Nederlandsche Maatschappij ter Bevordering van de Volksvlijt — the Société Générale, essentially — was founded in 1822 under William I as a state-backed development bank for the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. This note dates to just four years before the Belgian Revolution of 1830 dissolved that union entirely, after which the institution reconstituted itself separately in Brussels and The Hague.

Fleischman's engraving was produced locally in Brussels, which was still a Dutch administrative capital at the time of printing. The embossed seal as the primary security feature reflects how early these notes are — intaglio printing and watermarked paper were not yet standard for low-denomination colonial and commercial paper in this market.
