KM#941a is part of Turkey's long-running commemorative gold lira program, which recycled Atatürk's image across multiple denominations and weights for decades — produced primarily for export sale and gift markets rather than domestic circulation. The .917 fineness follows the traditional "coin gold" standard inherited from Ottoman-era practice, a specification Turkey's mint maintained well into the late twentieth century largely out of convention rather than necessity.
