Waldenburg, now Wałbrzych in southwest Poland, was a coal-mining center whose municipal authorities — like hundreds of German towns — issued small-denomination Notgeld during the severe coin shortages of 1917–1921. The half-Mark denomination was specifically aimed at replacing hoarded copper and nickel coinage, not as a banking instrument but as everyday transaction scrip for local shops and colliery workers.

Silesian municipal Notgeld is frequently encountered in bulk lots; Waldenburg issues are neither rare nor especially sought after individually.
