Indonesia's republican government began issuing its own currency during the revolutionary period against Dutch colonial rule, and this ½ New Rupiah belongs to that contested transitional moment. The "New Rupiah" series was introduced in 1949 as the republic sought financial instruments that could function independently of Dutch-controlled banking infrastructure — a practical necessity as much as a political one.

The series was printed under difficult wartime conditions, and surviving notes frequently show uneven ink distribution and rough perforations, reflecting the limited facilities available to the republican administration at the time.
