Additional information

The Nawabs of Arcot occupied an increasingly fictional throne by the mid-18th century — nominally independent rulers of the Carnatic, they were in practice maneuvering between the British East India Company and the French-backed forces of Hyderabad through decades of war. Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, who held power through most of this issue's date range, survived largely by indebting himself so completely to Company merchants that British intervention became financially inevitable. His copper coinage circulated through this entire deteriorating sovereignty.
