Nigeria's pre-independence coinage was struck at the Royal Mint in London and issued by the West African Currency Board, which had managed the currency of British West Africa since 1912. The 1959 date is deliberate — these coins were prepared in advance of Nigerian independence on October 1, 1960, giving the new nation a ready monetary supply that could carry Elizabeth II's effigy without yet bearing a sovereign Nigerian identity. The Currency Board was wound down shortly after independence as member territories established their own central banks.
