Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King John rendered in a schematic, Romanesque style, set within a large incuse triangle whose two sides extend to the coin's rim. The royal crown is depicted with fleurons above a flat band, and the king's face is shown frontally with stylized features. Two crescent moons appear in the upper field to either side of the triangle, a characteristic decorative motif of this Irish halfpenny series. The royal legend IOh ANN RЄX is distributed around the periphery of the flan, partially visible given the small module and frequent off-center striking.
