| Obverse description | Central field displays a finely rendered English saddle in profile, complete with stirrup iron and leather flap, serving as the trade emblem of the issuer. Above the saddle, the word SADDLER appears in bold raised lettering within a curved banner. The circular legend reads J.W. MEARS around the upper periphery and LAMBTON QUAY WELLINGTON around the lower, all separated by raised dot stops. The entire design is bordered by a beaded inner ring set within a raised rim, imparting a neat and professional finish characteristic of mid-nineteenth century colonial trade tokens. |
