| Reverse description | A large thistle plant, the national emblem of Scotland, is depicted centrally in the field, its spiny leaves extending outward on both sides in a naturalistic arrangement. The peripheral legend HALFPENNY TOKEN arcs across the upper portion of the coin, while the date appears in the lower exergual area. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

Nova Scotia's copper token coinage of the early 1840s was authorized under provincial legislation precisely because Spanish milled dollars and their fractional pieces — the informal backbone of Maritime commerce for decades — were draining out of circulation as trade patterns shifted. The province contracted with Boulton & Watt's successor firm at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, one of the last significant commissions that storied operation would fulfill before its eventual closure.
Breton 874 is the standard type. Die varieties exist within the NS-1 series and are catalogued in some detail by Canadian token specialists.
