Cuba's 1870 pattern issues were produced in Spain during the early push for monetary reform on the island, as colonial administrators debated how to structure a distinct Cuban coinage separate from the peninsular system. The copper striking of this half peso — a denomination that would eventually be realized in silver — was almost certainly a presentation or trial piece rather than a circulation proposal, given the obvious impracticality of a copper coin at that nominal value.
The X# prefix in Unusual World Coins places it among non-circulating or pattern issues outside the mainstream KM sequence. Few examples are documented in major collections.
