Jordan's shift to copper plated steel for this denomination in the 1990s was a cost-driven response to the kingdom's prolonged economic strain following the Gulf War, during which Jordan's refusal to join the coalition against Iraq cost it substantial Western aid and IMF support. The dinar lost nearly half its value against the dollar between 1988 and 1995.

KM#60 is the steel-core successor to the earlier bronze issues under the same Hussein ibn Talal, who reigned from 1952 until his death in 1999.
