| Obverse description | Central device features the crowned Royal Arms of Spain — a quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León, with the Granada pomegranate in base and a small escutcheon of the Bourbon fleur-de-lis at the fess point — all surmounted by a royal crown. Small fleurons or rosettes appear to either side of the shield in the field. The circular legend surrounding the shield reads •CAR•III•D•G•HISP•ET•IND•R•, invoking Carlos III as King of Spain and the Indies by the grace of God. The entire design is rendered in the restrained, mechanical style characteristic of milled colonial coinage of New Spain. The reeded border frames the composition neatly. |
