| Obverse description | Central field features a crowned royal cypher of CAROLVS II in monogram form, enclosed within a roped (corded) border. The date appears below the monogram in two- or three-digit form depending on the year of issue. From 1667 to 1681, a small pomegranate device appears above the monogram for assayers E, C, and V, thereafter replaced by a small pellet, with the exception of the 1686 VR issue, which reverts to the pomegranate for that year only. The crown above the monogram is small and ornate for issues dated 1667–1694, transitioning to a larger, simpler crown for issues dated 1695–1701. Four distinct monogram varieties are known: the first (1667–1671) flanked above by a pomegranate between pellets; the second (1672–1678) with a pomegranate above; the third (1679–1698) with a pomegranate above through 1681, then a pellet; and the fourth (1698–1701) with a pellet above. |
