Obverse description Royal crowned monogram of Philip II (PHILIPPVS) occupies the central field, flanked by the mint mark and assayer's initial positioned to the left, right, or below the monogram depending on the emission. The entire device is rendered in the characteristically irregular style of hammered cob coinage, with a beaded or toothed border visible where the flan permits. The surrounding legend, partially present given the cob format, reads DEI GRATIA HISPANIARVM, invoking the king's rule by divine grace over the Spanish realms.
