| Obverse description | The entire field is occupied by a five-line Arabic inscription in bold, flowing Naskh script, reading the name and titles of Sultan Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar, with the word 'Allah' prominently at the top centre. The legend translates as 'God / Sultan Said / bin Barghash bin / Sultan / may He preserve him', invoking divine protection for the ruler. Small decorative foliate ornaments flank the lower lines of text, lending a formal, calligraphic character to the design. The field is otherwise plain, with no portrait or pictorial device. The coin is bounded by a continuous inner border of raised beads following the coin's circumference. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays a four-line Arabic inscription in bold Naskh script occupying the central field, giving the denomination and mint name. At the top, the fractional numeral '1/2' is rendered in Western-Arabic numerals, followed below by the Arabic word 'ريال' (Riyal), then the mint name 'سكة سعيدية' (Sa'idiyya Mint), and finally the Hijri date '١٢٩٩' (1299 AH). Small decorative foliate sprigs flank the central text, and a single ornament appears at the base of the field. The design is enclosed within a raised bead border, consistent with the obverse. |
