Obverse description Central device depicts a chalice (omer cup) with a beaded base and a dotted rim at the top, flanked on either side by the paleo-Hebrew inscription reading 'חצי השקל' (half of a sheqel) with the year letter aleph (א, year 1) to the right. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. The die work is characteristic of the First Jewish Revolt coinage, executed in archaic paleo-Hebrew script. The field is slightly concave due to the hammered flan technique.
