Reverse description The reverse field displays a three-line Arabic mint and date inscription in Maghrebi script, reading the mint name 'Jazair' (Algiers) above the Hijri year, here illustrated as 1240. The legend is contained within a plain inner circle bordered by a raised scalloped or lobed ring, with an outer beaded border following the irregular hammered flan. The composition is purely epigraphic, consistent with Ottoman hammered gold coinage of the Regency period, with the date varying by year of issue across the series.
