Iraq's 1959 note series was the first issued after the July 1958 revolution that toppled the Hashemite monarchy and executed King Faisal II. The Central Bank itself had only been established in 1947, replacing the Iraq Currency Board, so this series carried real institutional weight — the new republic was asserting its own monetary apparatus at a politically volatile moment.
Bradbury Wilkinson had a long relationship with Iraqi currency production, and this quarter-dinar is a low-denomination workhorse of that arrangement. The fractional dinar denominations saw heavy everyday use and consequently survive in high grades far less often than the larger values from the same series.
