Switzerland's aluminium coinage of the mid-twentieth century was issued as a wartime expedient, freeing strategic metals for industrial use. The quarter franc series in particular saw limited circulation life — the metal's lightness made the pieces unpopular with the public, and many were returned to the Confederation well before normal coin retirement cycles.
