Additional information

Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah came to the throne in 1881 at age five, leaving effective power with the Rana prime ministers who dominated Nepal throughout his reign. The quarter mohar series of this period reflects the Rana administration's management of the currency system rather than any royal initiative — the king remained largely a figurehead while Jung Bahadur Rana's successors controlled fiscal policy.

The mohar itself was a unit with deep roots in the Nepalese monetary system, subdivided and struck in silver long before British influence pressed the subcontinent toward decimal coinage.
