Obverse description A crowned lion rampant facing right occupies the center of the field, depicted in the heraldic tradition of the arms of León. The lion is shown passant-rampant with its forepaws raised and tail curled upward. The design is rendered in low relief against a plain field, bordered by a continuous milled or reeded inner rim. No legend or inscription appears on this side.

Reverse description A turreted castle of three towers, representing the arms of Castile, is depicted in the center of the field in low relief. The castle features a central archway with a portcullis and two flanking towers, each topped with battlements. To the left of the castle appear the mint mark initials (LME for Lima, or L depending on the variety), flanked by pellets, and to the right the assayer's initials or the fraction mark '1/4', also flanked by pellets. The date appears in the lower field below the castle. The design is enclosed within a plain field bordered by a reeded inner rim.
