Additional information

Gibraltar's early 1990s platinum proof program was a deliberate play on the burgeoning bullion-collector crossover market, issuing fractional crown denominations in precious metals at a moment when the island's treasury was aggressively expanding its numismatic revenue streams. The Olympic Victor series drew on classical antiquity rather than contemporary Games imagery, sidestepping any IOC licensing complications entirely.

KM#65a is the platinum variant of a type also struck in gold and silver. Mintages across the platinum fractions from this series were extremely limited — in some cases under 500 pieces — though Gibraltar's records from this period are inconsistently published.
