| Additional information |
Sulayman I — born Safi Mirza — came to the throne in 1666 after a regency council essentially selected him for his perceived pliability. His reign was characterized by court intrigue, heavy wine consumption by the shah himself, and a gradual hollowing of central authority that the Safavid administration would never fully recover from. The Ganja mint, operating in what is now Azerbaijan, served a strategically contested region that had changed hands between Safavid and Ottoman control within living memory of anyone handling this coin.
Album 2660 distinguishes a Type B fabric for this reign. The precise die characteristics separating Type A from Type B issues reward careful attribution work.
