Obverse description The obverse features a large ornate tughra (calligraphic imperial monogram) rendered in Arabic script, centrally positioned within a beaded inner circle. Flanking the tughra at mid-field are two small five-pointed stars. The date appears in Arabic numerals above the tughra, and two olive or wheat sprigs frame the device in the lower field. The Latin legend 'GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN' arcs along the upper periphery, with the year repeated below it, all contained within the scalloped twelve-notched border.

Additional information

Pakistan's first coinage series was struck at the Royal Mint in London and the Bombay Mint, as the new nation lacked its own minting facility in the years immediately following Partition in 1947. The anna denominations presented a particular design puzzle: the crescent's orientation became a point of contention, resulting in two distinct varieties — opening left and opening right — both of which circulated concurrently.

The left-opening crescent on this type is the scarcer of the two in most grades.
