Obverse description Central field dominated by a multi-line thuluth legend giving the royal titulature and name of the ruler, enclosed within a circular border. The inner legend reads the sultan's honorific titles and name, Shah Ismail, with the mint name Astarabad and the AH date 918 incorporated within the central inscription. A surrounding marginal legend in thuluth script carries additional royal epithets encircling the central cartouche. The die is struck on an irregular flan typical of early Safavid hammered gold coinage, with the bold, deeply incised calligraphy characteristic of the period.
