| Obverse description | The Panamanian national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield bearing crossed sword and rifle in the upper left, spade and pickaxe in the upper right, the Isthmus of Panama with rising sun in the lower left, and a cornucopia with winged wheel in the lower right. An American harpy eagle with outstretched wings surmounts the shield, holding a banner inscribed PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO, flanked by a row of nine stars above. Two stars flank the shield at either side. The surrounding legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1.00 VN BALBOA is inscribed along the lower periphery, all separated by two small dots. |

| Additional information |
Panama's 1988 Calgary commemorative series was struck under the government of Eric Arturo Delvalle — or rather, the government that replaced him. Delvalle was ousted by Noriega in February 1988, the same year these coins were issued, leaving the question of institutional authorization for the series genuinely murky. Freestyle skiing was still a demonstration sport at Calgary, not yet fully medals-eligible across all disciplines, which gives the subject matter an oddly provisional quality.
