Romania's first nationally issued coinage, authorized following the Paris Convention of 1866 that formalized the country's autonomy under Ottoman suzerainty. The 1867 copper series was struck at Heaton's Birmingham mint and the Bordeaux mint — the two KM numbers distinguish between the two facilities, with subtle differences in strike character and edge treatment. Heaton's pieces generally show crisper detail owing to the Birmingham firm's more modern equipment at the time.
The issue predates Romania's formal declaration of independence by a full decade.
