Trade tokens and scrip issued by small-town American breweries were common enough in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but paper "bottle checks" — redeemable for a single bottle of beer — are considerably rarer survivals than their celluloid or aluminum counterparts. Paper wore out fast in tavern use, and most were never meant to last a week.
Haufschildt's Brew Haus operated in Weyauwega, a small Waupaca County town whose German immigrant population sustained several brewing concerns well into Prohibition's approach. This note would have circulated entirely within the brewery's own customer network.
